Lucy Zhang - Jump Seat Candidate
My love for horses started at the age of 10 after attending a summer camp. At first, I attended weekly lessons where my interest for the sport blossomed. However, that was just the beginning of a long, and complicated road ahead. Years of external setbacks and breaks held me from accomplishing my one and only dream - competing at my first horse show! At 14 years old, after moving from one barn to another; I was finally able to make my dream a reality. During this time, I began adjusting to life as a full-time student and dedicated athlete. Maintaining a balanced schedule between my passion and school life cultivated a new type of motivation I’ve never felt before, the drive to set myself up for an irrevocably, successful, academic future. The fulfillment I felt with life in the 8th grade was instantly dilapidated by COVID. With so many unstable changes to daily life, I was grateful that riding stayed the same.
It was not until the second wave of COVID had I noticed how much this sport kept me afloat. Having spent the most of my freshman year online, being able to consistently ride was what had pulled me out of this deep hole during my lowest points. This is the reason behind why I owe this sport for reminding me every day to not give up because I have come so far to reach where I am now. The reason behind why I push myself to achieve bigger goals in all academic, and athletic aspects of my life.
To the sport that has given me hope in a time of distress: I fell deeply in love with riding all over again.
